This studio mix, made in Ableton, explores a 30 year span of dub-, breakbeat- and jazz-schooled techno, electronica and IDM. It focuses on a narrow range of artists or labels that have inspired me consistently, for a long time. It was nice to make a mix away from the decks, and use the additional level of control allowed by a DAW to rethink what mixing tracks actually means, bringing it closer to production. The process feels more like painting, or making a sonic jigsaw, than djing, and I was finding it much better suited to an isolated activity (without a real-time audience) than a standard club setup. The mix was very loosely inspired by the early Scion (Substance & Vainquer) mix "Arrange and Process Basic Channel Tracks", which was one of the first ever things made in Ableton that was made publically available.
