Description
A 3 part podcast exploring the reissue culture of music across the African continent, the ethics of ownership, and who reaps the benefits of musical extraction. EP 1: Ostinato Records is a New York, Hamburg, and Bangkok-based label, rooted in storytelling the untold stories of artists from the global majority. I spoke to the founder Vik Sohonie about the discovery of the late great Abu Obaida Hassan from Sudan, and his turning point in realising that digging masses of records out of the continent is ethically unsound. We discuss alternative ways labels can platform music from these spaces. Artwork by @fazahthemazza Host and produced by @_ornellamutoni This podcast was primarily produced and recorded on unceded Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung land, Kulin Nation - a space I am still grateful to be able to have learned and unlearned so much from as a settler. I pay my respects to the ancestors and elders of these lands as well as all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
