Modulisme (which translates as Modularism) is devoted to out of leftfield modular synthesis. This week: Atau Tanaka's work exists at a point where instrument, body and system merge. For this session, he brings this research into a direct, physical form. Using an analogue modular synthesiser, he integrates EMG sensors that translate muscle activity into control data. The patch is no longer shaped by hand alone, it is continuously modulated by internal micro-variations of tension. Gesture no longer triggers sound, it becomes it. What emerges is a single system, where the modular synthesiser acts as an extension of muscular activity, responding in real time to intention, effort and the slightest contraction.
