KOLOGO FOLK POP - GHANA
A Rebel Up! - Freak Ass E joint venture mixtape
This mixtape presents modern kologo music (kologo 'folk pop') and features some key musicians from a flourishing local music scene in rural North-East Ghana and urban centers like Kumasi and the capital of Accra. Kologo is the Frafra name for a two-stringed lute. Actually a string instrument with numerous variants across West Africa and many different names (molo, xalam, ngoni…). Traditionally, kologo music is just voice and the kologo. But the last 10 years this music has undergone a slow transformation into a modern, 'pop' variant, blending the acoustic sounds of the kologo and the raw singing with digital beats and midi synths from hardware and computers.
