Description
This mix presents new, fast 'digital' folk music from the Acholi, a Luo speaking ethnic minority from northern Uganda and South Soudan.
'Acholi folk pop', is rural village folk music, but re-interpreted by means of computers, digital instruments and music software. And it's also the business card of many a talented singer or singing pastor.
Typical Acholi-Ugandan instruments (whistle, gourd, thumb piano, horn, xylophone, flute, bow harp, tube fiddle, trough zither...) fuse with digital percussion and midi instruments into a more contemporary sound. The fast, looped rhythms, cyclical melodies and choral singing are mostly in 6/8 time (fast waltz) but the strong accents give it strangely, a straight-up punk, polka or techno feel. Let's not forget the vocal ululating by the women involved these long, wavering, high-pitched vocal sounds, opening or breaking up a song.
