It’s early one Friday morning in April next year. As you come to the surface you are conscious of a sense of doom. The TV is still burbling faintly. There are empty beer cans on the floor, cigarette ash has been ground into the carpet. You can’t place what is wrong. Then you remember, it was election night last night.
It has been won by the Tories. You cradle your head in your hands, the shock above all the tedium. You voted for them yourself, of course furtively nose held. But you never expected so many others to do the same.

The whole lot grinning like idiots. Unpunished. Unchastened. Unbowed.
All those familiar Tory ministers, you realise are going to hang on to their Rovers and their red boxes and their zeppelin like self-esteem. With shaking hands, you have a cup of coffee. Not five more years.
