Description
This week, let’s talk tapes! And by “tapes,” I am referring to the humble audiocassette. For folks who were around during the heyday of the cassette tape, roughly the mid-‘70s through the mid-‘90s, tapes were a cheap and convenient way of taking music with you. In the world of musicians, a different but related cassette revolution started at the beginning of the 1980s, when manufacturers Tascam, Fostex and many others introduced 4-track cassette recorders. For a lot of musicians, this meant the perfect way to make demo tapes, which in those days were a great thing to drop off at clubs you might want to perform at, or record labels you’d like to work with. For other musicians, though, the demo tape wasn’t the means to an end, but perhaps the end itself!
