Orí, is a Yoruba metaphysical concept. Literally meaning "head," The Yoruba believe that every human being was born with a destiny or purpose (ori) and was called to Earth to discover and fulfil that purpose. In the words of Temitope Adefarakan:
"it is 'the essence of human personality which rules, controls and guides the life and activities of the person' (Balogun 2007, 118). Before our birth, while we are still in the realm of spirit, we choose our 'head' and, with it, the course of our worldly existence."
