From African-American funk-soul to Italian ballads and Caribbean dance tracks, Sinophone artists across East and Southeast Asia localized the canon of global pop throughout the 1960s–1980s. Western hits were translated, rearranged, and re-recorded in Mandarin and Cantonese, circulating as regional chart-toppers long before the internet era.
Some versions preserved the tone and sentiment of the originals: Teresa Teng’s Mandopop rendering of "Never on Sunday," Rebecca Pan’s adaptation of "Non Ho L’età," or Jenny Tseng’s lyrical take on "My Way." Others radically reinterpreted their sources. Mimi Gan’s "Namo Namo" turns Sister Nancy’s "Bam Bam" into a playful indictment of the swaggering playboy, while Frankie Kai’s "Bor...
