Makers of Siberia: Forgotten Siberian Jazz - 31st December 2024

For nearly half a century Novosibirsk, a Western Siberia city that’s currently the 3rd largest in Russia, had been home to thriving and forward-thinking jazz scene. Yet in terms of the large-scale Russian culture, still a maddeningly capital-centric affair, it’s not so much a well-known and respected phenomenon but rather a tremendously obscure blip on the cultural radar seen only by those in the know. Here are a few selections from Siberian jazz bands and musicians, mainly from Novosibirsk, but some other Siberian cities like Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk as well, recorded from 1967 to 2010, to showcase their range and inventiveness.
