Nigerian musician King Sunny Ade enjoys royal status from two monarchies – firstly due to his birth into Yoruba royalty in Southwestern Nigeria, and secondly, from his eventual rise to prominence as the King of Juju, the Nigerian popular sound that fused Christian choral performance with traditional Yoruba vocals and rhythms, as well as incorporating Western rock and pop influence.
With albums like 1977's _Sound Vibration_ and 1979's _The Royal Sound_, Ade ushered his distinctive juju sound onto the global stage, also helping popularise African music around the world more broadly.
