Much of Brazil’s musical roots stem from the Nordeste. Outside Brazil, many are familiar with the music of states like Bahia and Pernambuco, but few are intimate with the contributions of my home state of Ceará. This mix takes us through some of the music that grounds me there.
The featured musicians and composers are all from the terra do sol, as Ceará is known, or singing about it. The mix moves from the Rei do Baião, Luiz Gonzaga (later on singing a song by Cearense Humberto Teixeira), to the music that emerged from the Pessoal do Ceará, to the catalogue of composer Fausto Nilo through his various interpreters.
