In West Java in the 70's 80's and 90's Jaipongan was the music of the people. Developing out of rural folk forms and traditions and intentionally rejecting western and Dutch colonial influences, Jaipongan elevated the stories and struggles of working class people, forming them into moral, social, political and spiritual tales.
