This mix is part of the annual Felabrations that mark Fela Kuti's birthday (1938-1997). As part of the celebrations we'll be showing a recent documentary on the Afrobeat pioneer. Finding Fela! (2014) is the second film in a series of African music documentaries we are screening at Deptford Cinema; a fitting location just up the road from the birthplace of Fela's long-time collaborator Cream drummer Ginger Baker. The film documents his childhood in Nigeria, university life in London, his political awakening and untimely death. The controversial figure, who frequently attacked the Nigerian state in his music, is now cemented in history as one of the most important musicians to emerge from the African continent.
