We had a little rummage around the 'song of the year' lists from stacks of different publishers, avoiding the ones you all know, pulling out weird, interesting tunes that tell the story of this year. Like the year itself, it's muted and a little restrained, upbeat where it can be.
What did we catch? Lido Pimienta from the South American lists, Groupe RTD from Djibouti with a track we can't believe we missed; Kaash Paige's melting R&B and Juls & Agent Sasco summer swag; We haven't ducked on Fiona Apple, but it's the jazz and folksy lists that gave the most fruit.
The Xmas lockdown robbed us of being able to record in the studio as planned, so Stu had a wander around with his headphones and a field recorder and did the links. We'll have a show with our actual songs of the year in the next week or so, but here's what's in zines & blocks at the end of 2020.
