1955 : The year that Charlie 'Bird' Parker died at the age of 35...therefore I used "Ornithology" in the intro. It's also the year where I start my new series...for the next 10 Mo'Jazz shows I will take you through this decade of Jazz. From these 10 tracks there's 5 tracks with Horace Silver on piano, 4 with Hank Mobley on tenor sax, 4 with Art Blakey on drums and 3 with Kenny Dorham on trumpet...so they were very busy that year!
The Jazz Messengers were an influential Jazz combo that existed for over thirty-five years beginning in the early 1950s as a collective, and ending when long-time leader and founding drummer Art Blakey. "Art Blakey" and "Jazz Messengers" became synonymous over the years, though Blakey did lead non-Messenger recording sessions and played as a sideman for other groups throughout his career.
Next time I will highlight 1956...the year that Clifford Brown left us.
