“Why don’t you suck on this” someone suggested as he slipped an old school funk, jazz and soultape into my walkman. As my ears opened to a new world and its various sounds, several instalments in the form of tapes followed. Funk and soul gradually gave way to latin, fusion, free jazz, improvised music, contemporary music, African, Arabian, and back again to hiphop, soul, modal and spiritual jazz. Because I seemed to be fascinated by a variety of musical styles it took me a while to start collecting and even now I wouldn’t call myself a collector. For me finding - and enjoying new music, looking for unexpected rhythms, progressions and combinations, remains more fun than actually owning the stuff. Then again… some pieces are worth having.
