The rarest naturally occurring element in the Earth’s crust.
Astatine is a chemical element it has symbol At and atomic number 85.
A solid sample of the element has never been seen, because any macroscopic specimen would be immediately vaporised by the heat of its radioactivity. Astatine is the heaviest of the halogens and is essentially unavailable in nature with less than one teaspoon of the element found in the Earth’s crust at any one time.
ἄστατος (astatos) 'unstable'
The bulk properties of astatine are not known with any certainty.
