Description
In September's WorldBeatUK on Brum Radio, Glyn Phillips checks out some of the new and forthcoming releases from August and September. There's the usual eclectic mix, but with a bit more of an emphasis on Canadian and American artists this month.
The Featured Album for September is "Sublime" by the Cuban-raised, now Canadian resident, Alex Cuba and Glyn features three tracks from that. There's some sublime mariachi (now there's a phrase not many people utter!) from Mexico , Sephardic ladino inspired music from an Ashkenazi Jewish singer, Yemeni folk played on home-made instruments, funk from Brooklyn, 'imagined folk' from Slovenia and the final and posthumous album from France/Algeria's Rachid Taha who died a year ago.
On a local tip there's a new summer single from world-class Nigeria percussionist, Lekan Babalola (who now lives in Birmingham) in collaboration with Brummie hip-hop artist Jay L'Booth - and a feature on the Muzikstan Festival and gigs by Anna Mudeka et al in Brum.
