Description
In July's edition of WorldBeatUK, Brum Radio's DJ Glyn Phillips, takes on board oceans' worth of new music!
Quite literally as he looks at the album Small Islands Big Songs, which features collaborations from communities dotted around the Pacific and Indian Oceans, seggae music from the island of Mauritius, new fusions from the Caribbean Sea and a sea-faring collection of Scottish musicians in the Irish Sea and Atlantic Oceans.
There's also a deep spiritual quality to some of the music with updated Sikh kirtans (devotional hymns), acapella Christian praise songs in the lined-out hymnody style of the Old Regular Baptists of Kentucky and Virginia, Chinese Buddhist Temple music, earth healing music from the Bolivian Andes and an anthology of Slovakian death songs (not as grim as it sounds!!).
If that doesn't do it for you then how about South African malombo, Senegalese reggae and salsa? Mariachi? Cumbia? Latin Bluegrass? Electro-folklore? Bomba? Hiberno-American Banjophony, anyone?
