Disco is a genre of dance music & a subculture that emerged in the late 60s from the US urban nightlife scene. Its sound is typified by four-on-the-floor beats, syncopated basslines, string sections, brass & horns, electric piano, synthesizers, & electric rhythm guitars.Disco started as a mixture of music from venues popular among African-Americans,Hispanic/Latino Americans, gay Americans & Italian Americans in NYC and Philadelphia during the late 60s to the mid-to-late70s.Disco can be seen as a reaction by the 60s counterculture to both the dominance of rock & the stigmatization of dance music at the time.During the 60s,discotheque dancing became a European trend. At the end of the 60s, musicians & audiences from the communities adopted several traits from the hippie & psychedelia subcultures. They included using music venues with a loud, overwhelming sound, free-form dancing, trippy lighting, colorful costumes & the use of hallucinogenic drugs
