Description
‘David Bowie’s tribute gig at Brixton Academy was the celebration of his life that we needed. It’s a wet Sunday evening in Brixton, and a steady crowd has braved the rain to gather at the David Bowie mural – laying flowers and solemnly lighting candles as they pay their respects to one of South London’s favourite sons on what would have been his 70th birthday – only two days before the first anniversary of his death. But the stoic memorial on the street couldn’t be more different from the scenes unfolding less than 500 metres down the road at Brixton Academy – where some of Bowie’s old bandmates and biggest admirers have joined forces for the first in a series of tribute concerts around the globe.Far from being a time for mourning though, this is a show that instead acts as a joyous celebration of Bowie’s life and a solid reaffirmation of his eternal legacy.
